Transportation Purchasing Coordination Breakthrough Team
Team Purpose
Increase collaboration and achieve savings in three arenas:
  1. Increase the awareness and use of state contracts either to purchase products and services or as information in negotiating contracts locally.
  2. Early communication of KDOT 1R projects so local governments can coordinate and budget for possible county road and city street work or buy hot mix or other materials from the contractor.
  3. Create a Local Road Engineer position within the Kansas Association of Counties to work with local government.
Current Status
A selected contract listing has been created and is available in the Resource Center. This list includes the 100 contracts that would have the most interest to local units of government.

KDOT is in the final process of confirming the 2008 1R project sites and information meetings have been held in all of the six transportation districts.

Large items (i.e. dump trucks) not now on the State purchasing List are being made available to local units of government and are communicated through a statewide electronic list serve.

With the support of the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Association of Counties, the Local Road Engineer position was established April 1, 2007 and Norm Bowers is pursuing an aggressive agenda.

Next Milestones
KDOT 1R Projects

KDOT Area Engineers are personally notifying every county that has a 1R project and will provide contractor information. Counties will make sure this information is passed on to cities and townships.

Local Road Engineer

Norm Bowers, the Local Road Engineer, is working in seven arenas. See the June 2007 Blog submission for more details. You can contact Norm Bowers at bowers@kansascounties.org or 785-272-2585.
